This sign is a Royal warrant of appointment which have been issued for centuries to tradespeople who supply goods or services to a royal court or certain royal personages. The royal warrant enables the supplier to advertise the fact that they supply to the issuer of the royal warrant, so lending prestige to the supplier. Royal families in Europe allow tradesmen to advertise royal patronage.
Royal warrants are typically advertised on company hoardings, letter-heads and products by displaying the coat of arms or the heraldic badge of the royal personage issuing the royal warrant.
This sign belongs to a bakery in Amsterdam.

This would be a most special sign and appointment - very proud to have one of these on a building. I notice there are little lights to shine at night.. Very nice.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThis certainly is a different form of marketing!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenSounds like the ultimate stamp of approval!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI'm sure that would be an honor for the merchant, and it would certainly be a great marketing tool for them. I wonder about two things...how do they get a chance to supply something to royalty, and what happens if they fall out of favor? Would they get their sign taken down?
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe quality must be on a high level and is controlled so now and than.
VerwijderenVery nice!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenA unique and wonderful way to endorse your product! I like the reflections too.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenA 'right royal' bakery.. I'm going in Marianne :)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI've heard of that done in Britain. I didn't know it was in other countries as well. A bakery would be enough to draw me inside.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenEen grote eer.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThat was the old way of advertising your business. I guess it was before TV!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHow proud the owners must be to be able to display such a sign.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHmm, I wonder if they have any bagels? :-)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWell, if it's good enough for the King, it's certainly good enough for me! I'll have a croissant, please.
