Demolition finished

Maybe you remember my post a few weeks ago about the demolition of a big bank building in the center of Amsterdam with the "eating dinosaur". Look here for the post. Well I passed yesterday and noticed the building has gone, only some concrete remains are left.

I didn't climb on the fence but held my camera above my head.

The raise and fall of a building that was here only since the eighties. The cellar is the base and foundation for the new building so a kind of recycling in the construction Two shopping buildings will raise here, one of them will be hired by Marks & Spencer the other one becomes a luxury department store.

  1. It never ceases to amaze me how a building can be torn down around such a nice district and have great beauty in the destruction and then the re-building of the one to take its place. Great photo through that wire fence - lots of character.

  2. I can only imagine the care that must be taken to do this kind of demolition with so many other buildings around.

  5. Buildings come down so much faster than they go up Marianne :) so good that the foundations can be used, you'll have to show us what goes up in its place.

  6. Well, at least the foundations will be reused. All those raw materials turned back t dust -- it's a shame more can't be reused.

  7. Sounds like you might be in store for some great shopping, or at least some good window shopping, Marianne. They do have quite a mess to clean up!

  8. I would have been tempted to bring a chair and sit to watch the destruction. It would be more interesting than the construction.

  11. I can never understand why they knock down perfectly good buildings.

  12. Dearest Marianne,
A weird thing indeed for demolishing a young building from the 80s and rising on its basement, two new department stores. It must be all calculated for return on investment!

  14. I like that first shot. At first I thought it was a reflection because of the wonky bars at the top.
