Today was my mother's birthday and I remembered these old photos of her as a baby in 1914.
And as a toddler. People didn't have a camera those times but some went to a photographer to have a portrait. I am glad my grandparents did so and I have inherited these photos of her. I like specially this one with her distrustful look and the cute dress with the addition of the collar. She was the eldest of three sisters and was educated as a school teacher. She had to give up her job when she got married to my father who was a teacher as well. Married women were not allowed to work in the thirties and she had to sit at home alone to do the household! What a shame was that. She died twelve years ago when she was 89.
You are so lucky to still have these treasures.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI bet she had stories she could tell about life in the Netherlands growing up!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenMarianne, when looking at either of these photos, I'm reminded of my German grandparents and the skills they women had in making lace and sewing. I'll bet that the cloths on your mother were made will loving hands. She was so lovely. Nice remembrance of her.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWonderful post! Beautiful memorias, my mother is very clever and she even worked as a teacher when she was young but women didn't go to the university And the oportunity was for my uncle.

Lovely old photos to have - I too have many old family photos. During that period people seemed to be quite fanatical about having photos of themselves taken perhaps because it was a new thing for them.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenYou know what the first thing I thought when I saw these Marianne.. How very much you look like your mum , I see it so clearly. Lovely mementos..
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI read recently that why people look so somber in old photos was because photography at that time required long exposures and the subject had to remain perfectly still. It was too difficult to hold a smile for that long so they just relaxed their facial muscles thus looking as they did. I'm sure such was not the case here with your mother. She just didn't trust what was going on no doubt.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThat distrustful expression is priceless. Quite a treasure to have these images.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThose cheeks! So nice you have these photos to remember her by.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenEen knappe dame! Foto's om te koesteren.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThat's a good reminder of the state of photography at that time. Regular people didn't have cameras. My mother was also born in 1914.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenPhotos from this period are treasured more than those we make today. Not sure how we can change that. I also have old family photos that I treasure.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenBeautiful Memories in photos. My goodness, you do look like your Mum - Very nice post Marianne - we have no photos of our family past - lost in fire, when I was about 3 years old. I only have the stories my Mum told me and descriptions. Your photos are wonderful to have.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenwat een prachtige herinneringen!
