Tram ride (1)

This is the Haarlemmermeerstation in Amsterdam built in 1915 and used as terminus of the railroad Aalsmeer-Amsterdam. In 1950 the passenger traffic was discontinued, after which the goods, mainly coal transport existed until 1972. After the closure the "Electric Tram Museum" restored the line from here to Amstelveen and Bovenkerk and is  organizing tours with old Amsterdam trams.

So yesterday we took this oldie for a ride to Bovenkerk. I can still remember using this tram in the fifties as a child.

It had wooden seats for 20 passengers and room  for 20 standing passengers.

At the back was a balcony where with warm weather the doors were opened and you could feel the wind blowing in a hot city.

The driver had to stand all the time, no seat.

Here we meat a tram from the opposite, we didn't bump, they had a crosspoint where they could pass.

As you can see here.

When we had to cross a road in the urban places we passed, this man had to step out and wave the red flag while the tram was loudly jingling.

Here we passed the station of Amstelveen, a suburb of Amsterdam.
Tomorrow continued...

  2. I'm struck by several things in your post today. I am intrigued by the number of vowels your language uses in words and notice the length of some, also. The most impressive impression I experience is the beauty and preservation of the tram: so many windows and beautiful wood interior. Few seats but lots of standing room space. What a wonderful conveyance!
