Elburg

The Vischpoort (Fishgate) is the entrance to the old hanseatic city of Elburg.

The gate dates from 1592.

The city is famous because of its  medieval fortress walls.

It has very nice straight streets with special pebbles pavements.

Some of them are made of white cobblers with inlaid figures of black cuttings.

  1. I figure there must have been some kind of utilitarian purpose for these stones, too

  3. 1592! Incroyable Marianne. I saw a few of these ancient gates and walls when we were in Europe, fascinating to try and imagine the particular time and reason for the walls.

  8. Beautiful! Walled cities are a rarity here- the first that comes to mind is the Old Quarter of Quebec.
