Sunday tour to the east.

Sunday was chilly but sunny, we planned a trip to the east side of our country. Here we drove along the windmills on the dike in Almere.

We had to cross the river IJssel by ferry.

You see we have a lot of water in the Netherlands to cope with.

This is where we went,  the "Castle Het Nijenhuis" between Heino and Wijhe in the Province Overijssel. The castle dates from 1382 in the late Middle Ages. It was inhabited by several noble families. After the family Van Pallandt had sold the estate in 1934, followed a period of decline. The collector Dirk Hannema had the castle restored and the building converted in a museum with the collection of him in mind. He lived there from 1958 until his dead in 1984. In 2003/2004 the castle, led by architect Gunnar Daan was thoroughly rebuilt and refurbished and now transformed in a museum fully accessible to the public.
Tomorrow I show you more of it.

  5. What a lovely outing. The castle pic is magic. Such an old building, if only the walls could talk. Love the windmills too a little different to the traditional Dutch windmills.
