Ireland, day 3

We drove to Donegal which has a castle dating from the 15th century. We didn't visit it as it was to early in the morning and it was still closed.

Then we stopped at Creevykeel, one of the finest Court Cairns in Ireland. Built in the 3rd millennium B.C. it consists of a wedge-shaped mound, with a burial chamber opening off the open central court. Near the narrow end of the mound are two further graves. In the Early Christian Period iron was smelted in the central court.

We pass some very nice coastlines with the castle of Lord Mountbatten,  an uncle of Queen Elisabeth, who was murdered  in a bomb attack by the IRA in 1979,  who planted a bomb in his fishing boat.

We arrive in the city of Sligo where the poet W.B. Yeats (1865-1939) was born.

Although he died in France, his grave is in Drumcliff together with his wife George.

Sligo was a pretty place to explore.

But unfortunately it started to rain and we had to hide because it was very bad. But it never lasts long in Ireland and after rain came sunhine again.

After a visit to a folkloric museum, the National Museum of Countrylife in country Mayo with  style rooms we drove to our hotel in Castlebar.

  2. Marianne, I am so enjoying your pictures from Ireland, and so jealous to not be traveling with you. The rain makes for great pictures. So glad you are sharing.

  4. I am enjoying the tour. The statue of Yates is pretty cool in its stylized version.

  5. I recognize two names; Lord Mountbatten, who was incidentally the last Viceroy of India and Yeats, whose poems my belated father shared with me. These sparked two great memories and I thank you for that; and, sharing those beautiful views that you had the joy of seeing in person. The wall clock is lovely!

    Peace :)

  6. Cast a cold eye, etc. Op graven staan soms de prachtigste dingen te lezen. Dit is ook erg mooi.

  9. Yeats' grave is something I'd like to visit. Mountbatten's castle is unexpected- if anything came out of that, it's that the IRA never made the mistake of targeting royals again.

  14. Dearest Marianne,
Lovely photos about the historical sites and countryside as well. The weather could be Dutch, except a bit milder I guess as there were so many palm trees around our hotel in Dublin.
    Hugs,
    Mariette
