Ireland, day 7

This is the village Adare, where every house seems to wear a hat.

Look how thick the tached roof is.

We are driving in the county Kerry now and for the first time we see a beach life along the coast.

At the peninsula Dingle we visit the colourful painted village Dingle. In my enthusiasm with making photo's I was not watching out and fell on the street, hurt my knees and elbow, auch! Despite some scratches and a bit painfull knees I could fortunately go on.

We drive along the Atlantic coast and make a stop at Slea Head. The souvenir sellers in Ireland often make music to sell their products.

This is the Gallarus Oratory, a church in the shape of an upside down boat in Smerwick. It was built between the 6th and 9th century and is the best example of an early Christian Irish Church. It is made of stacked stones in a way the rain water could run off.

  1. Must have been dark inside the stone church.

  2. Sorry that you had a fall, that is so easy to do when taking photographs.
Dingle is a lovely little place, but I do love the upside down boat shape of the Gallarus Oratory.

  3. Those thatched roofs are unbelievable. That is an equally impressive stone building. I hope you weren't too embarrassed when you fell. I probably would have been. Fortunately it wasn't too serious.

  4. Wat een bijzondere kerk, erg mooi! Ja je kunt zo lelijk vallen, altijd naar als zoiets gebeurt.

  5. Lovely structures, and the thatched roof is amazing.

  6. wow, that church!
not funny that you fell... could happen to me too....
seems like we have to visit ireland now as well!

  7. Great photos of the villages and that ancient church. Seems there is music wherever you go.

  8. Sorry you fell. please be careful! The thatched roof brought back memories. I lived in a cottage with such a roof in The Netherlands. I am really enjoying your pictures...Janey

  9. Thatched roofs are something that's so peculiar to me, because you never see that on this side of the Atlantic.

  10. Dearest Marianne,
Poor you for hurting your knees... Know the feeling, this happened to me in South Africa when I was admiring the architecture above us... Ouch!
Lovely but rather heavy thatched roof in that photo. It almost wears the entire home down; smashing it.
What a nice historic early Christian Church indeed; simple but functional.
    Hugs to you,

  11. wow! I'm sorry you fell. How terrible?
But I would do the same, in such a place. The roof you showed is so incredible!!
