Open Monuments Weekend (2)

The second monument I visited was the Muiderpoort, a city gate from1771 which was part of the fortifications of Amsterdam. It was primarily used as office for toll and tax collection.

This is the ceiling under the gate opening.

This was the room on the first floor where the gatewatcher lived. The Gate is now in use as an office  by the Dutch Order of Tax Advisers and this is their relax room I suppose. You could have a worse place to do your work.

At the second level were the stairs to the dome on the top.

On top I had a good view at the octagonal dome and cupola, made of wood.

It is always nice to have a view from above.

And a look at the Tropical Institute of yesterday's post.

Above the gate at the pediment you can see the coat of arms of Amsterdam with the three Andreas crosses.

Here you have a look at where I stood near the dome.

  1. Amazing structure! I can see, though, why fires were a constant worry.

  2. Another interesting building. It is good that these old buildings are kept alive.

  3. I enlarged the ceiling shot. Amazing how the brick layers made the circular pattern with the bricks!

  4. Very interesting place, for sure. And I like that it is still in use. It seems that in many places in Europe, buildings and gates were built for tax collecting.

  7. You have the neatest building there. I'd be sitting in the tax collector's office thinking 'and this is what I have to pay these high taxes for?'

  12. What a gorgeous building, and such a view, too.

The spiral stairs makes it all the more appealing. I had a third floor loft for awhile, and the access was a spiral stairs. I enjoyed living there.

What a sturdy wooden beams they used for supporting that dome part!
