Mercury Fountain

The Mercury Fountain in Leeuwarden dates from 1923. Mercury, the mythological Roman god of commerce, travel and profit can be seen on top of the pedestal.

The sculptor Professor G.A. Bredow (1875-1953) from Stuttgart was commissioned to portray the city of Leeuwarden important themes such as agriculture, livestock, fisheries, trade and traffic.
I like the man and his bull representing animal husbandry.
I think I'd rather see traditional fountains with sculptures than the modern waterworks I showed you last Sunday.

  1. I agree, some modern sculptures just leave me shaking my head and wondering what in the world the artist was thinking.

  2. Now this is more the type of sculpture I love and adore. This fountain with all its beautiful sculpture is fascinating - not so much with some of the modern ??"sculptures" of the weirdly present artists .....whose work I just look at in a dumbfounded way and think to myself "WHAT". Just recently we received a stone sculpture for our waterfront, donated by the artist and when I went down to see it, I was amazed and confused. The work on the stone is most beautiful; however the piece called "time and eternity" itself is a wonderment of confusion. There was a local man standing looking at it too and of course I said hello. We talked briefly and his impression was "a huge dog bone, curves and circles". I didn't say much. I was still trying to figure out "time and eternity"? ha,ha
    HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY :)

  6. I'm with you. I can appreciate the talent and skill that goes into a sculpture such as this than the modern pieces that leave me thinking "I can do that".
