Free market

The name of our royal family is "Van Oranje" so orange has become our national colour and many put something orange on at Kingsday.

For the jumble sale or rummage sale people come very early in the morning to find a nice selling place for their stuff in the streets. We call it a "free market" because no permit or entrance fee is neccesary for this special one day in the year.

The whole center of Almere was covered with carpets full of stuff, mostly toys and clothes. Children try to sell their toys to earn money to buy other ones.

This boy was showing his skills on the guitar for money.

It was a sunny but cold windy day but as long as it was not raining everybody was happy. I didn't buy anything, I have a house full of stuff, maybe I have to sit on a carpet next year too.

  1. I love the colours in the crowd and it sure looks like a fun day. I would simply go to be a part of the excitement and take photos like you, and perhaps if I found a food vender I would be sampling too.

  5. That lady in the last picture is certainly into the spirit of things for Kings Day. We have occasions here to put out stuff for sale to clean out closets, etc. We call them garage sales. It is a lot of work to get things all laid out and priced and then to barter for the sale. Not something you want to do very often.

  6. Interesting way to sell our "stuff". Garage sales are far too much work as Linda says!
I like the idea that the kids also participate.

  7. Strange that they can only do this one time a year. Very different from our way selling unwanted items. I don't think I'd do too well without my weekly dose of flea market and garage sales.

  13. Dearest Marianne,
Oh my, your humor towards the end. Well, just today I told my husband that the older I get, the less fond I am of the many things we have collected over the decades... And it all needs to be cleaned! So yes, maybe we ought to organize a sale? Here they do have yard sales, garage sales and sales as fund raisers so that is a great way for recycling things. Or an estate sale where everybody can go and buy things.
Glad the weather was cooperating in such a way that it did not rain.
Right now we have heavy rain and all through the night and also for tomorrow 80% chance of rain... Not good for such events!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  14. Fun to look...but we got rid of so many things when we moved. I have several bare closets and cabinets! It is a freeing feeling.....that is until you go looking for something you discarded!
