Weekend Reflections

With a mirror behind this impressive "Manteau" from 1759 in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, I saw some interesting reflections.

22 year old Helena Slicher married in this dress  with Baron Aelbrecht van Slingelandt. It must have been difficult tho hold each other hands.

  1. That is a funny reflection. I always have to lean out like that to read the plaque in art galleries. I have a hard time reading from a distance and have been told many times to back up.

  2. Great photos! This dress reminds me of the painting "Las Meninas" by Velasquez.

  9. So if you lined up the mirror reflection with the portrait on the far wall she would have her head on backwards.

  10. I believe I see you in a reflection. What a dress... you could hide people under there.

  11. What a dress, it's beautiful but must have been awkward to walk in. I don't imagine it was good etiquette to hold hands in these days anyway!

  12. In die tijd was het vast veel minder lastig met zo'n jurk.

  16. Dearest Marianne,
It is quite a design and beautiful embroidery but indeed the other half had to walk before her for hooking her arm into his or for holding hands.
She was only able to sit down and God forbid if she had to go to the 'little room' as it really had to be a bit roomy for her to maneuver this sideway sticking skirt.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  20. Absolutely stunning gown! But so "unwearable!" :-) Beautiful embroidery though. Ah, the romance! And your reflection was perfect.
