Sunday Bridges, Hildo Krop

Posted by Picasa

I mentioned before my love for the sculptures on bridges in Amsterdam of  Hildo Krop. This one is at the "Muzen-square" , built in 1929 and decorated with two sculptures, a boy with rabits and a girl with
squirrels.

Upon the pillars of the bridge is a big rearer horse with a little girl between his legs, called the open-mindedness of mankind.

Flea- market

I love to hang around at markets, this one is in a huge hangar in the north of Amsterdam "Van Dijk & Co". There was beautiful engraved glasswork from Hongary, I bought two vases. Can't show you, left them unfortunatly in the car of my sister- in- law.

Souvenirs

For the foreign tourists we have lots of souvenirs, windmills, wooden shoes and Delftware. These were low priced on the market and I discovered a new item at the right, had this one never seen before in Delftware.

This is not what it likes, the woman and the dog are not real. It is a optical illusion on the wall, just like the next one.

Herford buildings

When you travel in Europe you will see that each country you pass has its own way of building houses. These are typical German half-timbered houses. We have them too in the south part of our country near the border with Germany

I like such coloured houses, must be great to live in the stock with the oriel window.

Look at this beautiful facade with gold above. I only don't know what the english telephone kiosk had to do here.

MARTa Herford ( 2)

We went for a exhibition about the engineer, futurist and designer "Richard Buckmister Fuller"  (1895-1983). My husband was inspired by him when he studied architecture. It was not allowed to make photo's at the exhibition but in other parts of the building it was. This is an example of one of his ideas in the hall. If you want to know more about him and his work read here.

This is a view of the ceiling. We met somebody who works in the museum and she mentioned the problems with leaks by rainwater. I can imagine with such a complicated building.

We had lunch in the futuristic cafe. Where the lady sits above right was not accessible for visitors but I think a room for meetings.
About the (strange) name of the museum, it is not someone called "Marta" but it means M=Mobel/Furniture, ART=art, a= ambience.

MARTa Herford

Posted by Picasa
I was a couple of days in Herford Germany to visit this museum, called "MARTa Herford". It looks like it has fallen apart but it is in 2005 designed by the famous  Canadian/American architect Frank Gehry, who has made more of these special buildings, a.o. in Bilbao Spain.
It was very difficult to make a good photo of it because you can't get around, but I tried my best.

At this photo-page you can see better photo's from above for instance.
Tomorrow I tell you more about it.

A sunday at the museum

At the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam I saw yesterday a beautiful exhibition about the Berlin-born photographer Marianne Breslauer (1909-2001). Despite her small oeuvre, Breslauer is regarded as one ot the most important avant-garde German photographers of the inter-war years. She made very personal poetic photo's and had worked a.o. with Man Ray. She focused her camera mainly on ordinary people and details at the periphery of city life. I like her portraits of modern liberated women most, they looked so of our time, like this one above. See more photo's of her here.

I will be away for a few days to Germany.

Wet

This summer has been mostly sunny and warm until Thursday, we had a very bad day with lots of rain all day long and heavy storms. My parasol was blown down upon the chairs. Next day we had sun again as nothing had happened.

Exhibition

We had lunch here last week, a bakery store in Amsterdam with a lunchroom. We sat here for ages waiting for our salad. That is sad, opening a good looking business and than a bad service. At least I had time enough to make a photo.

Before we had been to an exhibition of the photographer Anton Corbijn in  the FOAM Amsterdam.
He has made many portraits of famous people amongst popstars, writers and models. This one above is Gerard Richter an artist. See the links above.

Sunken boat

Posted by PicasaNot only bicycles disappear in the canals, some boats have to struggle too to keep at the surface. I read that 450 boats a year are dredged up and sometimes a car. It is a busy occupation to keep the canals clean.

Bicycles in canals

Many bicycles in Amsterdam are thrown in the canals, don't know why but yearly 10.000-15.000 bicycle-wrecks are dredged up from the water. Here you see the result when a bike has been in the water for some time.
There is a special boat to get the wrecks fom the water, see this video

I love the way this building in the Utrechtse street has been restored in a sort of Art Deco style.

ArtZuid again

Red Man by Thomas Houseago

And this is what you get with art in the open air, schoolgirls having a pause sat down on "the Happy Prince" by Ryan Gander. Maybe they were waiting for their "Prince on the white Horse"?

Once more a few sculptures of ArtZuid, there were so many of them that I hadn't see them all. So I went
back yesterday to see the rest of it.
About the aeroplane of Joost Conijn yesterday I can tell you that he really has made a flight with it to Africa.
Look here for an interview with him (only in dutch)

" ArtZuid" , International Sculpture Route

Searching for Utopia by Jan Fabre
Aeroplane by Joost Conijn
The elephant by Karel Appel

During this summer there is a beautiful art exhibition in the open air in Amsterdam, visible for free for everyone. Famous works from Karel Appel, Corneille, Joan Miro, Jean Dubuffet and many others are placed in two long avenues, 58 pieces in total. It is incredible to see all this beauty not in a museum but outside. Look at their  the website for more information.

Funny building

June 30 my blogfriend CaT of picture/day had posted a photo of a building with a "face" in Boston.
It looked so familiar dutch to me with the bricks and now I know why. Yesterday I was in Amsterdam in the neighbourhood where I grew up as a child and I must have passed this funny building many, many times and stored it up in my mind.

This is where I once lived in "Amsterdam Old South" at the right behind the trees. You can see the little building left.
