Fireworks

Tonight is New Year.s Eve and the tradition here is to celebrate it with lighting fireworks at 12 o.clock midnight. This was in our backyard a few years ago.

It seems people need every year more and more fireworks.

And we have almost daylight in the middle of the night. Thanks to Covid restrictions  this year fireworks are forbidden, but the Dutch don't let them tell what to do when it is a tradition and I am not sure we will not have fireworks in the sky tonight........... Have a nice end of the year everybody and stay safe! Linking to "Skywatch Friday"

Happy New Year

A view of my backyard last night.

And the front sight, it was a noisy evening here. A Dutch tradition is to light as much fireworks as you can  effort in the streets in front of your house which I have never done. It seems there is every year more to spend on a moment of oohhhh....
Anyway I wish everyone a Happy New Year with good health and a lot of joy!

A Happy New Year

The fireworks at twelve from my window last night.

Every habitant in the Netherlands can buy fireworks and light it at New Years Eve in the streets.

This crazy habit in the Netherlands couses each year deadly accidents or loosing  hands, fingers or sight, mostly with growing up boys. This year it is not different. The public opinion is finished with this but for some strange reason it can not be forbidden.
Anyway a happy, healthy and fireworks 2018 to you!

Another Dutch tradition

Usually we live in a quiet area here but on New Year's Eve it changes in a kind of "War zone". The Dutch have a long tradition of setting of fireworks in their backyards and the streets on New Year's Eve. I remember of my youth we had some little asterisks you could hold in your hand on the streets and that was it. Boys used to have some firecrackers with big bangs.

But times have changed and so the fireworks have, complete light shows go in the air and it looks like daylight here in my backyard.

There are discussions going on in society how to handle this, lots of accidents happen with eye and hand injuries mostly by children. But another Dutch tradition is long discussions before decision- making. Nobody wants to be the one who forbids this dangerous tradition that has got out of hand.
Our cat Sofietje didn't understand what was going on outside and we couldn't explain it to her so she hid in fear in far places in the house.
By the way a Happy New Year everyone!

A bit fresh air

At New Years day the weather was fine, high temperatures 9 degrees C ( 48.2 F) with a bit sun so I went out to feel the fresh wind around my head at the dike. The night before had been short due to the crazy fireworks in our neighbourhood that went on until 3 o'clock in the morning.

This is what kept us awake during the night.

Every inhabitant of the Netherlands can buy his own fireworks a few days before New Years Eve.There are some rules for instance it is not allowed to use it before New Years Eve. Well don't tell a dutchman what not to do, rules are made to break. So the noise starts immediately and goes on until all the fireworks have gone in the air. The Dutch have spent 67 million euros! to their fireworks this year, well not me I am not a big fan.
