Storm
At a bit messy place with lots of traffic around in Amsterdam, I noticed this bench with decorations.
With a closer look it happend to be a donation of 18 municipalities on" Schouwen Duiveland", a part of the Provincy Zeeland on the south west coast of the Netherlands, to Amsterdam as a thank you for the help during the flood disaster of February1953. This has been one the worst deadly floods in our country when the dikes broke down with 1836 people losing their lives.
After the storm disaster, a major relief campaign was started up in our country. I must have been only 5 years old, but I can still remember a big truck arriving in our small street in Amsterdam to pick up furnitures and clothes for the people who had lost everything and that my parents gave away my white wooden baby bed.

The lion is a symbol of the Provincy, rising up from the waves. The bench is decorated with the coat of arms of the different towns and villages.
As we have very bad weather here at the moment with storms and heavy rains, living behind a dike close by, I can imagine a little bit how it must have felt...

Storm
Maybe you have heard we had a heavy storm here yesterday which even had got a name "Ciara".
Well it was more a hurricane than a usual storm. The whole country came to a standstill, no trains, no plains and the roads were dangerous to drive with trees coming down.
We went for a short walk to the dike but the winds on the dike at the Gooi lake were so strong we could hardly stand still. We had to hold on to each other as we felt we could blown away of our feet.
When we arrived home our backyard fence had collapsed. Well at least no damages at the house.

Storm
We had a crazy day yesterday with a heavy storm we have seldom seen here before, With winds of 100 km ph the country came to a standstill, no trains, no plains and much damages and unfortunately three people died by fallen trees. This photo I picked from the internet, because I stayed home all day. Fortunately we had no damage at the house and the surroundings, but we saw amazing images on televison of roofs ripped of from buildings and people blown of their feet. I understand we reached the news in many countries as I got some comments yesterday, thanks for that.

Calm after the storm
Yesterday we had a very heavy storm raging over our country, very unusual for these summertimes. Many trees have fallen down and damaged cars or blocked the roads. Fortunately we had no damage, only our garden furniture was flying through the garden. This photo I made last week in Amsterdam, you can see the parked cars and the trees along the canal.
And this is what happened yesterday (photo from internet).

Storm
We had a very heavy storm yesterday with lots of incidents in our country. We cancelled a visit with friends because of the bad conditions on the roads. Many trucks had fallen aside and we wouldn't risk to ride behind one.
We only made a short walk to the dike where I was even blown of my feet for a moment, fortunately not photographed by SC.
A spectacular view when the sun broke through the clouds, shining on the turbulent water.

The aftermath of the storm
During the storm yesterday the firebrigade arrived with a chain saw to cut down a tree which threatened to fall down like the other one in yesterdays post.
And here the top comes down. I was making photos with the company of our two local professional press phothographers, so it will maybe be seen in our local paper soon.
When the storm finally calmed down we went outside and saw a lot of damage in our neigbourhood, many trees had come down.
Normally we have storms in November but this was an early one and all the trees still had their leaves so they couldn't keep their balance against the strong winds.
The center of Amsterdam had also a lot ot trees coming down along the canals and unfortunately a woman died when a tree fell upon her. Watch this blog http://schlijper.nl/131028-00-storm-amsterdam.photo with a little movie of the damage in Amsterdam .
