In de garden of the "Rijksmuseum" in Amsterdam, I saw these sculptures, her name is Prudentia.

Two lumberjacks?

That left one looks a bit of a bully to me.

Rembrandt (2)

Today a few more of the Rembrandt portrait exhibition I showed you ""here" last Saturday.
This one "Selfportaits at a young age" made me smile. Jildou de Jager is the artist.

This one is from a real talented painter "Remy Diephuis".

And this one I liked very much too, so many talented people making all this at home.

Fountain

In the garden of the Rijkmuseum in Amsterdam it is always fun with the fountain. The boy hesitated, but his sister had no doubts. When you step in time in the centre you don't get wet, and you are surrounded by the water.

She is almost invisible, he is a still a bit worried....

Long Live Rembrandt

More than 8000 people in 95 countries responded to an open call of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam to submit self-made artworks inspired by Rembrandt. An expert panel of  judges selected 575 works made by a total of 693 people for inclusion in the Long Live Rembrandt exhibition. The themes of the exhibition emerged from similarities between works made by the many different artistst. The themes include the "Night Watch", "Portraits in the style of Rembrandt and Rembrandt the storyteller.

The result is overwhelming

Some are so funny!

And the modern way. Watch their website with a little movie "here"

Rijksmuseum exhibition

"Everyone  photographed" was the slogan in 1900 that the Amsterdam photo trader Joan Guy the Coral encouraged the people to go photograph and buy a hand camera. At the end of the nineteenh century, it was mainly prosperous young people with an interest in new gadgets that brought the Netherlands to photograph. From their common interests as cycling, they founded associations, held soirees and went on excursions.

This is a photo dating from 1892 on board of a ship and shows how the amateurs made completely other photos of each other than the stately portraits so far.

There were many photoalbums exposed.

With very small photos.

And some old hand cameras of course.

Small Wonders

In the RijksMuseum in Amsterdam I saw an exhibition of  Dutch micro-carvings from the late Middle Ages.

Detailed Biblical scenes are produced on  such unimagical small scale, you can hardly see them without a magnifier.

A dismantled Prayer Nut. They were all made at the workshop of Adam Dircks from 1500-1530

This three-demensional story is carved from a single piece of wood. It illustrates the life of George, the legendary warrior-saint who liberated the city of Silene from the clutches of the dragon.

Garden

A view into the garden of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. I made the photo through the gate as in winter the garden is closed for public. It was a sunny but cold day a few weeks ago.

And another peek through the gate.

Weekend Reflections

With a mirror behind this impressive "Manteau" from 1759 in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, I saw some interesting reflections.

22 year old Helena Slicher married in this dress  with Baron Aelbrecht van Slingelandt. It must have been difficult tho hold each other hands.

Breitner

This is the easel of dutch painter "George Hendrik Breitner" (1857-1923) exhibited in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. He deliberately chose his models from rhe lower classes, workers, maids and residents of poor districts. This portrait is named "the Earring" the first painting in his Kimono series.

One of his most famous paintings is "Girl in Kimono". From entries in his sketchbook and photos we know she is "Geesje Kwak" who posed for the painter between the ages of 16 and 18. In 1895 she emigrated to South Africa where she died at a young age in 1899.

Breitner had stayed in Paris in 1884, where Japonism dominated the fashion scene and he became fascinated by Japanese art. He made 13 paintings with the same subject,  Girl in Kimono,  and they were all on display in a museum for the first time.

Fortunately there was another painting which he is famous for and I liked very much, one of his many  impressionistic streetviews of the old Amsterdam in the 19th century.

Catwalk

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has a beautiful exhibition about fashion, named "Catwalk" dedicated to fashion of the Dutch from 1625 to 1960.

The exhibition is designed by Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf and he made a fantastic moving catwalk with seats aside where you can watch the dresses slowly passing by.

Look at this wedding dress.

The uncomfortable dresses with addings behind and aside, how to sit in these?

Because of the vulnerability of the old fabrics there was not much light to photograph.

The masterpiece was this weddingdress "Manteau" from 1759 worn by  22 year old Helena Slicher. The dress is more then 2 meters wide and has beautiful embroidery.

I couldn't resist....

Golden scooter

A golden scooter made by Indian artist "Sobudh Gupta", placed in a small expansion of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam next to the "controversial" underpass. The underpass of the museum for pedestrians and cyclists was a hot item during the renovation of the museum. The director of the museum wanted to close the underpass for cyclists because of fear for accidents with pedestrians. The Cyclists Union has campaigned for years against this desicion until in Court and they won the case in the end. Scooters are not allowed, but the director has placed this piece of art visible next to the underpass as a subtle reference to the controverse.

Here a photo of last year of the Museum and the underpass.

A new Wing

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam openend a new Wing last week "the Philips Wing" with an exhibition  "Modern Times, photography in the 20th Century".

The wall with B&W portraits by Belgium "Stephan Vanfleteren" is stunning. At the second line in the centre you can see a portrait of our former Queen Beatrix.

There was a hallway in the new wing with a beautiful ceiling. The lamps are made of drapery and moved up and down in which they openend and closed like flowers.

The entrance to the Philips Wing.

Rijksmuseum

A few images of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam I made last summer.

Watching the old masters.

A very old painter's box with the residues of paint still in.
