Naarden

As I mentioned before Naarden is a fortified city dating from the 17th century.

The ramparts meandering around the city.

The Townhall dating from 1601.

Pretty old streets.

With nice houses.

Some look like a castle with a tower.

St Matthew Passion

A text on the facade of a house in the city of Naarden refering to the performance of the "Mattheus Passion" ( St. Matthew Passion) of composer Johan Sebastian Bach. Every year before Eeaster his three hour music is performed in the Big Church in Naarden in attendance of the complete government with Ministers and Prime Minister.

The text is about : After St. Matthew Passion, people humming here around, greet each other and all together weaving a web of voices in the little streets.

It is a bit difficult to translate but I hope you understand the  message.

Through the city are more texts on walls about Bach and the St. Matthews Passion.

Here ia picture of the Big Church in Naarden where the performance takes place.

Flying

When I uploaded this photo of the entrance to the fortress in Naarden I saw I had an unexpected addition in the left corner. A pigeon I think, had its wings spread perfectly against the blue sky.

Friday Fences

The fence on the right hand side is in the pretty city of Naarden. It is hardly to see as it is covered with green as you can see in the photo below.

Picture Perfect

It almost looked like the owner of this house had arranged this for a foto shoot for a magazin. The cat didn't even move when a made the photo, only his ears turned a little.

Naarden Fortress City

During the walk over the ramparts of the fortress city of Naarden, I climbed to the highest point to have a nice overview.

The fortress has six bastions and  double ramparts and canals.

Here you can see a part of the city surrounded by the fortress. Naarden was established in 1350.

Naarden is one of the best preserved fortress cities of Europe and has a unique star shape which you can see at this airview photo from internet.

Monument

In Naarden this special sculpture catched my eye. It is called the "Climb" and happens to be the National Donor Monument. It symbolizes on the one side someone who had an organ transplantation and thanks to his donor climbs to a new life and on the other hand a surviving relative who climbs from a valley of grief because of the dead donor lives on in someone else.

The sculpture is designed by Egbert Hermsen and made by artist Ben Overkamp.
