Door

 A door I photographed in 2015 in Amsterdam because I just liked it. Made out of wood in "Amsterdam School" style. A style of architecture that arose from 1910 through about 1930 in the Netherlands. Watch the link for more information.

In the area in Almere where I saw those red buildings in my post a few days ago, we walked around and there was more colour.

The area has been named "Rainbow neighbourhood", so that explains.

Architecture

"Rode Donders" is the name of  three residential buildings that mark the transition from the low-rise neighbourhoods of Almere to the polder. Their shape refers to the industrial buildings and is reminiscent of grain silos.

I saw them always from a distance when driving by on the highway, but we decided to have a closer look in another part of Almere than our close surroundings.

Joost Swarte House

Dutch cartoonist and graphic designer "Joost Swarte" designed these four special rental apartments in the Willemsstreet in one of the oldest parts of Amsterdam "the Jordan"in collaboration with architect Sytse Visser.

These luxury apartments were completed in 2010. Swarte, together with his family, had a stay in one of the apartments for a month. It is now known as the "Joost Swarte house".

Skywatch Friday

A blue sky above the former pop venue in Almere City, built in 2003 of zinc materials by Alsop Londen .After the pop business went bankrupt in 2005 the building was empty for years. The last thing I read that a Casino would use the building, but I must admit I don't realy know what is inside now. Have to check it sometime.

Bagsvaerd Church

A white fence in the complete white Bagsvaerd Church in Copenhagen designed in 1968 by Danish architect "Jorn Utzon" ( 1918-2008) most notable for designing the Sydney Opera House in Australia.

It is considered to be a masterpiece of contemporary church architecture, thanks to its naturaly illuminated interior and its ceiling straddled with softly-rounded vaulting.

Even the ship was white.

From the outside it didn't quite looked like a traditional church.

The area in Copenhagen where our fancy hotel was situated is very new with all kind of different modern buildings as this apartments building

With roofs covered with sedum.

Green balconies, they call it the Mountain Dwellings designed by "Bjarke Ingels Group" (BIG)

The Bridge

Copenhagen is since 1999 connected to the city Malmo in Sweden by the Oresund bridge. The bridge is 7.845 metres long and 57 metres above the water. It is a dubbledecks bridge with a train riding under the autodeck.

We  crossed the bridge to make a short visit to Malmo.

In Malmo we walked in the new Vastra-Hamnen harbour area and watched the imposing skyscraper "Turning Torso", designed by Santiago Calatrava.

The tower reaches a height of 190 metres (623 feet), with 54 stores and 147 apartments. The tower is based on a sculpture by Calatrava, called "Twisting Torso" which is a white marble piece based on the form of a twisting human being.

We saw some colourful houses.

And on the way back I spotted an old library.

"This bridge"is also famous by a Scandinavian crime drama television series "The Bridge" in which a dead body was discovered in the middle of the Oresund Bridge just at the border between Danmark and Sweden.Unfortunately it started to rain when driving back to Copenhagen.

Yourtopia

Walking in a city you don't know so well is always full surprises. I noticed this "Hobbit home"? next to the New Institute, the former named Architecture Institute in Rotterdam.

You could enter for free.

Once inside I was surprised by unknown and strange plants and trees that evoke the sense of an exotic oasis.

There was a man, a doll? lying in a hammock. At a closer look he happened to be a real guy, but he didn't move a bit and had his eyes closed, A bit scary it was, was he a homeless taking a rest?

On the door were some texts.

I did some research and this is part of an exhibition Yourtopia of the New Institute.  I give you the explanation here.

"An oasis of calm in the middle of the city. The New Pavillion stands on the grounds of the New Institute. This temporary pavillion was designed by architecture office SeARCH. Bjarne Mastenbroek, the founder of the office, describes the design as a Yourtopia, a vision of living in the early 21st century that is as personal as it is utopian. The steel structure of the domed pavillion recalls traditional nomadic huts such as igloos and yurts. The exterior is overgrown with grass. Inside a world of serenity almost totally secluded from the world outside, the pavilion is where you can find calm."

I still don't know if the guy in the hammock was real or not, it was mysterious.

Signs, signs

A sign of the architect Piet Blom who designed the Cube Houses in Rotterdam. 

It sais : "Hey what is this? Is this a palace or is this a fair?"

He expresses the words people probably would say at first sight of his houses.

Another quote of him "Live = love, love = the roof of the city".

Market Hall

As I promised in my post from last Sunday, I'll show you some more pictures of the Market Hall in Rotterdam. The building is still in progress, so it was not possible to enter the hall yet but there was an information center in one of the apartments on the fourth floor where you could have a look in the hall from above behind windows. In the background is also a special apartment building named "the Pencil".

The inside of the arched hall is stunning, it is all covered by an impressive 11.000 m2 piece of art by Arno Coenen and consists of larger-than-life images of fresh products which will be sold in the Market Hall.

I had to make the photos through a window where many people had put their fat foreheads against before, so their are some blurred spots in it.

The spectacular design is from the Rotterdam architectural firm MVRDV.

This will be the Foodwalhalla.

From the apartment you have a nice look at the city around.

And the Public Library.
