Memories

Suddenly some old photos from 2012 are surprisingly popping up on my computer. These are French men watching the petanque game on a square in Cannes.

Woman in action with throwing the ball.

Taphophile Tragics

Many cemeteries in France have portraits of the death on the tombstone. It makes it very personal and I must admit I am curious to look at the persons images.

These pictures are all made in Saint-Paul-deVence in the South of France.

Taphophile Tragics

Don't know what to think about this grave in Saint-Paul-de-Vence in the South of  France. Is it a bed, a stretcher?  Anyway it is different from the usual tombs.

Taphophile Tragics

In contrast to the not se well maintained grave of Marc Chagall of last week post, the other graves in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, cemetery in France were covered with all kind of flowers, stained ones and fresh ones.

I think their relatives still live close to the cemetery to keep the flowers fresh.

Taphophile Tragics

Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a beautiful little city in the South of  France where many artists live and sell their work. The ramparts date from 1536.

Their deaths are burried at a cemetery just outside the ramparts with a magnificent view over the surroundings.

The famous painter Marc Chagall is burried here. He was a Russian born Jewish painter who moved to Paris because of the difficult circumstances jewish people had to live in. During WWII he fled to the US, but returned to Europe in 1946. Since 1950 he lived in St-Paul-de-Vence.
His grave was a bit disappointing, and I couldn't get a good picture of it. It is just a simple white tombe without ornaments, but not se well maintained.

His name was hardly to see but he was born in 1887 and died in 1985 when he was 97 years old. The name Brodsky is of his second wife, probably Michel was a brother in law or a child of his wife who is burried here too.

As a Jewish custom little pebbles are laid on the tombe by visitors to pay their respect and to remember him.

Petanque

It doesn't matter you live in a small village or Cannes a frenchman will always play his national sport with the balls.

This man acted a bit theatrical with his game throwing the ball, but there is always an audience sitting on the bench.

A bit suspicous what I was doing there with my camera?

I thought it was mostly a "men-game" but to my surprise here was a woman joining the men,

Ineke IV

When the boat is called Ineke IV, I wonder have there been a I, II and III before? That Ineke must be a special woman to have her name for the fourth time on a boat. This huge one was in the harbour of Cannes at the French Riviera. Along the Italian and French Riviera coast you see everywhere these  boats lying in the harbours. It seems nobody is really enjoying to sail with them.

I think it is just for us to look at.

Balancing act

In a parc in Nice, in the South of  France, this boy was balancing over a rope.

His friends were attentive watching his act if he would make it to the end.

He managed without falling and the next one started his try I think the boy left once felt of the rope as I look at his ankle.

Bracelet

In Cannes this woman sold beautiful fake jewellery at the flea market for a nice price.

I couldn't resist this snake bracelet. I call it my "Wallis Simpson" bracelet.

Although hers was a panther with onyx and diamonds.....

Monaco

I hope you don't mind I continue my tour. This is Monaco a 2km big state with high buildings on a rock. After all the beautiful old villages we had seen before, this was quite different, Manhattan at the Mediterranean sea. At the harbour you can see the remains of the platforms for the Formule One competition which took place just a few days before we arrived.

We watched the changing of the guards at the royal palace with a few hundred other tourists.

There were three cruise-ships in the harbour which all had to unboard their passengers in Monaco, so it was very crowded in the little town.

We didn't follow the parcours but we saw her gravestone in the church.

To avoid the crowds we decided to visit the Oceanographic Museum with a great aquarium and an exhibition of the artist Marc Quinn which this huge baby was part of.
At the blog Monte Carlo Daily Photo Jilly wrote a lot about this exhibition.

The aquarium was great with beautiful huge bassins with sharks.

On top of the museaum is a terrace with art and a view over Monaco.
