I think I have mentioned it
before here that to move house in Amsterdam is a tricky business. You have maybe noticed the hoisting beams on top of the houses which are used with a block and a tackle to hoist up the goods. Most houses are built narrow and high with notorious steep stairways. Moving big furniture in or out these houses have to be done at the outside. There are professional removing men who you can hire for the job, but many people do it together with some friends which is much cheaper.
This big sofa, heavy swinging around, attracted a lot of attention in the street , while two men were trying to get it in the window which was very difficult. The public below held their breath but in the end they managed to get it in.
Last winter I took this picture and waited until some furniture would be hoisted up.
But it took to long and nothing happened. I see now, like in yesterdays' post, another american icon, the flag at the balcony, the dutch are very US minded!
great catch! funny to see they still do it that way!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI have seen the hoists but the first time I have seen one being used. I wouldn't like to do that.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenReminds me of when I helped a friend move her grand piano into one of the top floors in a high rise and we had to hire a crane. Precarious business!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI don't think I would like to move, too often.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI am totally amazed. I have only heard of this only occasionally, as very few houses around here would need to do this. Most doorways and halls, even in high rises are built to accommodate the movers, however; once in a while you might see a window even taken out to get furniture in - very seldom though. I have a friend in the city that has been called to lift such large items into apartments in a few high rises, such as pianos and large furniture with his crane - tricky business and good for business, Eh. Thank you Marianne for your kind thoughts and words these past weeks regarding my brother. They will always be in my heart. Have a wonderful day. Lilly
BeantwoordenVerwijderenoh my goodness. I am so glad I don't have to do that. Eek!!!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenGo back! I want to see the piano being hoisted up.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhen you see the beautiful houses in Amsterdam you never think about the problems of moving furniture in and out.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenLooks like hard work.....but the only way with those skinny stairs!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDearest Marianne,
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThat is a bit scary; even if done by professional movers! But our apartment in Italy had about the same problem. We had to bring the biggest pieces up via a kind of hoist, from the back of the building to the 5th floor and into a window... I held my breath!
Hugs to you,
Mariette
i guess an american lives there!
BeantwoordenVerwijdereni think i never saw this happening in real life... so funny.. the apartments here also have such a hook... we live on the 4th floor, and i am not looking forward to moving up all the boxes we still are expecting from the us....
Heel gevaarlijk werken met een touw. Beter een ladder te huren.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenGroetjes,
Filip
