Sitting on a terrace high above the Kalverstreet in Amsterdam, I had a nice view at the street below. Usually this is one of the most crowded shopping streets, particular in the weekends. But at this moment there was not much public so the organ players had a coffee break. A barrel organ (or roller organ) is a mechanical music instrument consisting of bellows and one or more ranks of pipes housed in a case, usually of wood and mostly highly decorated. The barrel organ is activated by a person turning a crank, or by clockwork driven by weights or springs.
At a post in 2012 I showed some pictures of the barrel organs, have a look here
Barrel organs must have been quite a spectacle when the were first seen......even now they are! I like the way you find new angles to from which to view your subject.

So, the real name is a barrel organ. How interesting What a treat to be so close as one comes by with it infectious music. Love the sound. genie
BeantwoordenVerwijderenNice to see he gets a break. Love the Organ Grinders on the streets of the Netherlands.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenNeat angle for your photo. Well done. I'd love to listen to it play.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThis is really a neat shot - looking down and seeing the top of the organ - how interesting is that - very :)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDearest Marianne,
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThis is so typical Dutch and I LOVE those street organs. Funny is that in 2007 during my visit as a chaperone to Japen with 6 students, we did end up at an Organ Museum where lots of Dutch and Belgian organs were showcased. That made my day... I even danced to their music.
Hugs to you and keep those very interesting and informative posts coming.

Nice shot from above. We have nothing like that here so I have never seen a barrel organ.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenGreat shot! It would be fun to hear this organ!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenLeuke foto! Zo kunnen we het eens goed van de andere kant bekijken.
