These are the Houtrib locks, a lock complex on the route between Amsterdam and Lemmer in Lelystad. The complex was opened in 1975 and constist of two locks and a sluice. The Houtribdike separates the IJssellake from the Markerlake. The locks are each 190 m long and 18 m wide, they are suitable for vessels up to 5,000 tons. Every year some 88.000 ships pass through the locks. The sluice consists of six openings are sealed with steel lift gates.
I tried to make a photo of the "defecating Man" of my post of December 4th sitting on the locks.
I am very impressed with this bridge and the Houtrib locks - we have nothing like that here, just regular bridges, but we do have the longest bridge in the world over frozen water from my province of New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island - "The Confederation Bridge, approx 22 km in length and high enough in the middle for even the largest of ships to pass under. Love your posts.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenOf the man-made structures pictured here, I much prefer the locks. :-)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDearest Marianne,
BeantwoordenVerwijderenYep, that is Dutch Water Engineering at its best! It all looks so solid and sturdy that one can feel secure inside this tiny country with all its engineering marvels!
Hugs,
Mariette
Yes, agree with Mariette above, incredible feat of engineering! You suceeded with your last shot Marianne :)))))
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI marvel at the keen minds that developed all of this. ...and wonder about the minds of those that placed that sculpture there?
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI can see the man doing his business now - didn't quite see it before. In some cultures, squatting is good for you.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI wonder if that was Gormley's intention.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenBlijft indrukwekkend om te zien.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhat a feat of engineering.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenYou have an amazing transportation system. Nicely done with a photo and explanation of how everything works.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIndrukwekkende sluizen.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenGroetjes,
Filip
