As we have a mild winter this year without snow or ice, I delved in the archives to see some old times when we had cold winters. This must be in 1956 in Amsterdam on the canal along our home and it is me in the middle with my sister and brother photographed by my father. We are all skating on the wooden skates with an iron that was tied under your shoe with bandages which were called "friese doorlopers". Only my sister had some old skates with shoes which had belonged to my mother. When I look at the clothes of everybody I feel I lived in another century. We all had just one winter coat and no sportswear, we didn't even know what that was. The dutch have always been skaters and when there is ice everybody has to go out on the ice.
Reminds me of some old leather hockey skates my older brothers used to wear when my family was living in Canada. Nice combination of group pictures, BTW. :-)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenOranje kleurt mooi!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenZo leuk zijn die oude winterfoto's en herinneringen aan de ijspret. Geen sportkleding, maar misschien wel een gebreide borstrok eronder.
Fijne zondag,
Times sure have changed!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWe dressed pretty well the same way back in the "olde" days - and today have so much to choose from, eh. Congratulations you the young men and women winning at the Olympics - lovely colours.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenYou worked with ice skates the same way we did with roller skates. I enjoy these old photos you dig up.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenVintage photos bring back many memories! dI watched the mens's event. Wonderful for your country and especially for Sven Kramer this year. Love speed skating events.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenNice segway into the Olympics. The style of clothing is interesting but the technology of the skates is far more interesting. All people look very happy...the skaters in 1956 and the Olympic winners.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe vintage photos are so much fun. I bet these athletes parents got them outside a lot too!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWat leuk zo'n gezellige foto. IJspret hebben we nu ook al twee dagen. Wat is het genieten van onze kanjers.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDearest Marianne,
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe Dutch seem to be born with skates under as they almost always excell!
Congrats to you in The Netherlands; we're proud of them too!!
Hugs,
Mariette
Coming from a cold part of the world, I grew up on ice skates, too. I loved the book, Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates and remember my mom reading it to me and my sister. Do you know it?
