Heritage

When the buildings around have been demolished you suddenly have an unexpected view at the backside of the former town hall of Nieuwer-Amstel. It is a Neo Renaissance building from 1892 overlooking the river Amstel at the front side. After absorption into the municipality of  Amsterdam in 1896 it became a location for the Amsterdam City Archives in 1914. The archives have been moved in 2007 to another location.

A detail of the stairs at the front.

The building has also a magnificent tower. The plans for the surroundings are apartments and the beautiful building will change into a five star hotel in 2016.

  2. And let's just hope Donald Trump isn't behind the renovation. :-)

  3. You old buildings are so ornate and dignified. They just don't make 'em like that anymore!

  4. Beautiful building, love that staircase! Hopefully they won't destroy the building's old character with a renovation into an hotel. Will be strange to see brand new apartment buildings next to such an old historical building...
