The river Amstel is a broad river meandering through the city, to whom Amsterdam owes its name. Most old cities in Europe have such a river like the Thames in London and the Seine in Paris. People settled a city along a river due to the transport posibilities by boats. There are nine bridges over the river Amstel, this is a new one from 1970 called the Toronto bridge due to the two twinned towns.
This is one of the old bridges the "Hogesluis" dating from 1883. It is decorated with city arms.
Looking from above bridge you can see the Skinny Bridge from 1934 with the Townhall in the background.
Here an air photo from internet with the river Amstel
and the bridges.
Belas fotografias das pontes de Amsterdam.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenUm abraço e continuação de uma boa semana.
So many bridges there and a nice variety.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHello, neat series on the bridges. So many different designs. Great photos, thanks for sharing. Have a happy day!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI love these bridges, especially the structure of 1883. Really beautiful.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe second bridge is my favourite. I hadn't known Amsterdam and Toronto had been twinned.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe twinning of Amsterdam and Toronto is new to me. The bridges of Amsterdam are truly iconic, and I enjoyed your views of them.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenLove these river and bridges.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn Helsinki there is the sea, not any river. So I think the river is always wonderful to see.
A wee bit of Toronto there!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDank je wel voor al een paar dagen reizen door Amsterdam! :)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI really like those old bridges, too.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI'm always wondering about the car nuisance. Since this is downtown I would think most of these are foot bridges.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI like the old bridge the best, especially those lamp posts.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhat a variety of styles.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenInteresting bridges and waterways! The old bridge looks very beautiful with elegant decorations. And good to know name reason of Amsterdam, and it’s very true that many cities are formed around the water bodies, like lakes, rivers and sea.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenNice to see that all the bridges are different, certainly makes it more interesting.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenBridge upkeep must be a big part of the city's budget. So many to maintain but it is worth it!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI didn't realise Amsterdam was twinned with Toronto Marianne, don't you love that we learn from each other every day! I like the design of the Toronto bridge but you really can't beat the old bridges for character. Super aerial shot of the river.
