This gateway the "Rasphuispoort" used to be in 1603 the entrance to a prison for tramps and beggars. Since 2017 it is the entrance to a new shoppingmall in Amsterdam.
That is an impressive gateway. Life back then was a lot harder and the poor people suffered the most. I like Cloudia's comment, "we are prisoners to commerce".
Impressive gateway but it frightening to know that someone could end up in jail for trying to survive from day to day.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenFunny how things change!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHello Marianne!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenGreat capture of this impressive gateway!
Like the statues on top ! Thank you for sharing!
Enjoy your new week!
Dimi...
Couldn't get more of a change of use for a gate than that Marianne ☺
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe gate is majestic, but I suspect that the prison was awful.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThat's a much more welcoming place than its former use probably was.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenOh that is very nice, but I wonder what the prison looked like?
BeantwoordenVerwijderenPracht poort!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThere is irony here. Maybe the point is to think about that as shoppers pass through the gate ....
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWe are prisoners to commerce!

BeantwoordenVerwijderenQuite a different use.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenKind of ironic, don't you think? :-)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenEen stukje historie temidden van de commercie. Toch zeker mooi dat het nog steeds bewaard is gebleven.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenAn impressive gateway …
BeantwoordenVerwijderenAll the best Jan
What a great entry Marianne.
