Southern Church

A winter view at the tower of the "Zuiderkerk"( Southern Church), a 17th-century Protestant church in the centre of Amsterdam. In summer it is not visible from this point by the leaves of the trees. The design of the church is Renaissance style by Hendrik de Keyser.
The church played an important part in the life of Rembrandt who lived close by and had three of his children burried here. The Southern Church was used for church services until 1929. During the final (1944-1945) winter of World War II, known as the hunger winter in the Netherlands because food was so scarce, the church was in use as a temporary morgue because people were dying faster than they could be buried. Since 1988 it serves as a municipal information centre with regulary exhibitions.

  2. It has quite a long history. I can see by those trees that it would be totally obscured when the leaves are on the trees.
