This very nice sculpture in Amsterdam of a teacher and his pupil is situated in the area "Jordaan". The teacher is Theo Thijssen (1879-1943), a wellknown dutch writer, teacher and socialist politician.
He wrote a famous book "Kees de jongen" (Kees the boy) in which he describes the poor circumstances people lived in Amsterdam in the early years of the 20 th century, with bad housing and poverty. He writes very touching about the daily life in a schoolclass seen from the view of the boy Kees and how the school and the teacher are a safe heaven in those troubled times.
I like that this sculpture depicts a scene, and it's so simply done.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHope you are well, Bieb!
I think school and the relationship between a student and teacher is still very important in the lives of so many kids around the world.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenTouching sculpture!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenLOVE the sculpture and I think that it is wonderful that a teacher is immortalized in this way on a public square. Kudos for the community!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThat is a pretty cool sculpture. Sounds like Theo was a pretty cool guy himself.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenOh what a lovely piece. What emotion it portrays. He was obviously a teacher that invested much of himself in his students.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenI love this sculpture! I saw it when I visited Holland but had forgotten the story behind it! Now I must look for the book!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenStill remember some of my teachers when I was in elementary school! They have a lot of influence!
