The port of Muiden with the "Muiderslot", a castle located at the mouth of the river Vecht where it flows into the IJsselmeer. It was rebuilt in the fourteenth century after it had been razed to the ground in 1300. Currently it is a national museum with restored rooms and kitchens as it looked like in the 17th century and several rooms with arms and armour.
Close to the castle is this fortress that belonged to the Defence Line of Amsterdam in the 19th century. It was a warm sunny day and we walked over the dike at the right along the IJssellake.
Here a view of the fortress and the castle together.

Lovely photos of these historical sites.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThat is truly an ancient castle. I marvel at the fact that America hadn't even been discovered yet at the time it was razed!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenBeautiful! I would love to see inside both.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenVery impressive (both the fortress and caslte), also love the immense greenery surrounding it!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenVery nice. I see more of those gardens too.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThis is one that we visited...but always nice to see it again.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenNow that's a very picturesque scene!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenSchilderachtige plaatjes.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhat an interesting place
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe fortress and castle look quite inviting. And it's in such a beautiful setting.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenYes, the setting is outstanding. Love to see the boats, too.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenCool stuff! I'll bet there's a long and interesting history with it.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenSplendid shots!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI like the fortress and I see the big gun also. Not in use anymore, I reckon; and, that's a good thing. Cyclists on the road warm my heart.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenPeace :)
I love this photo - Ancient Castles and modern boats, cyclists on the path to both castles. What lovely history and great photos. I especially love the cannon - just love cannons.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDearest Marianne,
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe Muiderslot is such a lovely castle and how wonderful to have those rooms restored to their original use!
The Fort too is great and what a special walk on top of the dike with such a view.
Happy Pentecost weekend to you.
Hugs,
Mariette
You have the most interesting walks Marianne, and now the perfect weather to enjoy them :)
BeantwoordenVerwijdereni like this castle! i still want to go there once again as well....
BeantwoordenVerwijdereni recently read that for tourists they call it "the castle of amsterdam" to make them feel its not too far outside amsterdam and have them visit it...
