Molly Malone

This is Molly Malone a woman from Dublin who sold cockles and mussels in her barrow in the streets of Dublin. Molly is a legend who lived probably around 1680 and has be sung by various Irish artists.

It is said that except the fish,  she sold herself as well and died in the streets of a disease. The song about her is so famous in Dublin and beyond that she got her own statue in 1988. Here is a link about her life with all kind of theories.

And this is the song by "the Dubliners".
It is a catchy song that keeps in you head when you have listened to it.

  1. What fun to hear the song, which, I, too, could join. I wonder why I know all the lyrics? Can't recall when or why I learned it; must have been years ago as a child. Your posts have stimulated me and we hope to plan a trip to Ireland next June.

  6. There is a pub in a nearby town that goes by the name of Molly Malone's. But I didn't know that was based upon a real live person. Thanks for the post on Molly Malone.

  9. Believe it or not we learned this song in grade school as part of our traditional song book. Even though it's a dirge, we sang with gusto.
