Here some items they had found in the wreck. A pair of slippers, some coins. hoist and rigging blocks and an iron bar bullet with still gunpowder in it.
A writing slate with chalk, probably used for administration. A little brush and a needdle to repair fishing nets.
Some not used pipes, probably for selling and some shards ofm porcelain saucers and a scissors.
This was the place where the crew cooked and had their meals and stayed warm at a fireplace.
They had even decorated it with some tiling to feel at home like the Dutch kitchens had in those times.
The narrow place at the left was the place to sleep. The wooden ton was found on the deck and was used for saving drinking water.
I love looking at old items that were used in people's daily lives so long ago. Nice that they added the tiles to the kitchen area. I have seen similar tiles in the KLM lounge at JFK airport.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThose slippers look very modern though.
Those artifacts are so valuable for historical records!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenGosh travel by sea was harsh back then Marianne, although they knew no other way I guess. A far cry from the luxury sailing these days.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThese artifacts give us a look at how people lived in previous times. It gives us lots to think about.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWat bijzonder dat ze tegeltjes meenamen als herinnering aan thuis!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWonderful photos of old things. The last photo is my favorite.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenGracious! A fire aboard a wooden boat. Just the thought of it makes me shiver. :-)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenInteresting artifacts and so amazing they were preserved so we'll all those years. I was sort of surprised that sailors would wear house slippers.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDearest Marianne,
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThat is incredible what they all found still in perfect condition.
Such a wooden barrel could not contain that much drinking water either. Probably it was beer as that was a lot safer in those days for drinking; like they also used on the Mayflower.
Not much ample space for cooking or sleeping...
Hugs,
Mariette
What an insight into life aboard the ship those artefacts give us.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenAmazing how sailors lived in those days
BeantwoordenVerwijderenVery interesting. Such cramped quarters, I would not like one bit. Plus I'd be sea sick all the time too.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenFascinating what they can preserve!
