In the New Land Museum in Lelystad I watched a wreck of an old ship that was found in 1961 in the soil of the Flevopolder. At that time it was not immediately excavated and after that it was for a long time difficult to find the exact location. In 1986 they eventually succeeded by a crane operator who was doing preparation works on a building site. In 1996 it was excavated and salvaged.
It is exposed into a special barn with soft light and climate conditions.

The ship must have been from about 1705 and must have been shipwrecked in 1710. It was a so called "Ventjager" a ship that was sailing along the fishing boats on sea to collect their fish and bring it to the shore and sell it for them. The fishing ships didn't have to return to deliver the fish but could go on with fishing which was much more profitable for them.
The ship is 15 metres long and about 4 metres wide. Because it was sunk with one side into the clay, that side is very well preserved and gives a good look how they lived on the ship. Many objects have been found and I will show you tomorrow more ot them.
When you look at this site "here" you can see how the ship was excavated.
Makes me think of the fishermen who worked on this vessel.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhat a wonderful find and fascinating story. My imagination runs wild when I think of its history and its occupants. Have a good week-end!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenAn exciting find and fascinating to see Marianne, amazing that there is anything left after all that time.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI love the fact that we are now able to find and discover these wonderful artefacts from long ago hidden beneath the sea and under the ground. Some good does result from technology too.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt is very impressive.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThis is wonderful. I find it amazing how they are able to preserve these sunken wrecks so well that details in their construction can be duplicated today to recreate these vessels. I'm looking forward to more of this.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThat is wonderful to see!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenOngelooflijk dat het er na zo'n lange tijd nog zo uitziet.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt's interesting how the boards are very roughly cut. They had some great stuff to seal the cracks.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThat was really interesting. I was amazed to see how deep into the mud it had come to rest. Looking forward to tomorrow's post!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt's great that the old objects (boats) are found and protected. This has been a quite big vessel. Great fotos.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHow interesting. Sounds like they figured out a good system so that the fishermen could keep fishing.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenVery interesting post !
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDearest Marianne,
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThat gives us quite a fascinating insight in life at that time...
Hugs,
Mariette
