As many countries in the world we remember these days the victims of World War II. At Dam square in Amsterdam you can find this text between the cobblestones. It refers to a tragedy that took place here on May 7, 1945. Two days after the Capitulation discussion in Wageningen the liberation was already celebrated at Dam square when suddenly a shooting came from a balcony of a building where German soldiers had been hid. People had no way to hide at the square and 32 of them were killed and 100 wounded.
In 2016 32 name stones are placed between the cobblestones with the names of the victims.
The next day the Canadian liberation troops entered Amsterdam when the Germans finally had capitulated.
It was such a horrible time in history.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenEen mooie gedenkplek voor deze gruwelijke gebeurtenis.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHow tragic for the families of this victims.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe day before the city was liberated, how very sad. I like the memorial though. Subtle and organic, a gentle reminder of the atrocities of war.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenUma data a não esquecer.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenUm abraço e boa semana.

Tragedies such as this are extremely sad. Nice memorial.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI had never heard of this tragedy. A nice tribute.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenParticularly hurtful example of what the Allies defeated TOGETHER! <3
BeantwoordenVerwijderenSenselessness of war.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenOh that is tragic Marianne. To survive the war only to be shot after it had finished, that is too horrible!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThis scene from what I have learned was duplicated elsewhere; after capitulation, the loser still did not hesitate to kill and maime as a "going away" gesture. Dastardly!!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI loved this post, I wish I had known about this before we visited the square!
